Seventeen-year-old Lyra Ashwood, a Vermont girl who has spent her whole life compulsively drawing silver trees she can't explain, feels pulled toward a wood she can't name, and missing a mother who disappeared when she was four. When a mark blazes up her wrist one September evening, she discovers the truth: her family made a blood bargain with the Winter Court two hundred years ago, and she has been called to fulfill it. She is taken through the Veil into Aethermoor, a world of obsidian palaces and silver birch forests and too-close stars, where she must complete three magical Trials or serve the Court for a century. Her reluctant guide is Caelan — the Winter Court's cold, careful heir, who argues against helping her and then helps her anyway, and who has been keeping a sketch of her mother in his study for fifteen years. The Trials are not what they appear to be. The blood bargain is not what it appears to be.
