The Help
“Sir, the potentials will be here any minute. Are you certain you don’t want the red tie?”
The man of the house scoffed, adjusting his collar.
“Timothy, red makes people hungry for food–not a nice, juicy...." he trailed off in thought as he eyed the two ties, "I want to appear edible, but not desperate. I'll take the blue," Magnus tossed the red tie on the bed and then grabbed the other one only to rethink his option and grab the red tie, "Edible..."
Timothy nodded and left his boss’s bedroom chambers. He could hear the goings-on of the house servants, including Timothy who’d begun barking out orders.
Today was a special day as Magnus Moran would have ten lovely young women brought to him from all over the country in the hopes of becoming his wife, Mrs Magnus Moran.
Had he gotten the idea from a reality show? Nay. He’d been trying to find a woman for years, but to no avail.
Six months is all he needed and he’d find her eventually. Magnus did this every few years, but he had many, many women in between.
He just devoured women. They were incredibly delicious to him.
“Sir, I do apologize for interrupting you again, but the new hires will also be here today.”
“Today? Of all days?”
Timothy sighed, “We shall keep them to the servant’s quarters then?”
Magnus nodded.
“Yes, I don’t need them running amuck today before training.”
Magnus slicked back his black hair, his green eyes twinkling back at him reminding Magnus so much of his father’s.
“How do I look?”
Timothy smiled, “Dashing, sir.”
Lola made her way up the long and winding road because the cabbie refused to take her further.
She hadn’t any money left to pay him and he simply didn’t want to deal with her so there she was, rolling her luggage down the road in the hopes that someone would come along before it started to rain.
Lola’s phone had died an hour before and she was only a few miles from the Moran estate.
A few cars passed her by, but they were going in the opposite direction. Her curly dark hair was frizzy and she knew her first impression was going to backfire on her.
Lola was hired through an agency a few weeks prior when the Moran estate placed an ad for a bunch of housemaids and groundskeepers, etc and she jumped at the chance.
It would be close enough for her to begin her masters in child psychology if her hours permitted. Either way, Lola only needed about a year to save money and she’d be set.
The rain began to fall, at first little drops and then fairly large droplets pummeled her as she power walked the rest of the way.
The estate was huge, but the gate was closed and locked so Lola punched the button to gain access.
“Yes?”
“Hi, I’m Lola Lancaster and I’m here to start, -”
Before she could say anything else, the gate opened and Lola was taken almost immediately by the size and beauty of the sprawling estate and its buildings. The architecture was magnificent.
A car pulled around and Lola gathered her things into the backseat with her as a young man helped.
“I’m Sam,” He extended a hand and Lola shook it in good gesture.
“Lola.”
They drove around to the front door where a very handsome man stood next to an older gentleman who appeared bored.
Sam helped her out of the car and Lola made her way to the duo standing on the grand stairs leading up to the front doors.
One look from the younger man told her she wasn’t what he expected.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Lola Lancaster. Your new housekeeper.”
He rolled his eyes and sighed.
“Sam, all of the new hires are to go to the guest houses until further notice.”
Lola scowled.
“It’s nice to meet you too, Mr?”
He smirked.
“Your boss.”
“Mr. Your Boss.”
Lola was treading on thin ice, but she was soaked to the bone in the humidity of the day and he hadn’t even been kindly receptive to her.
“I’m s-sorry… ” Lola lowered her gaze, “Are you Magnus Moran?”
“Mr. Moran to you, Miss Lancaster. We’ll deal with you and the rest of your colleagues later. Pity you aren’t one of my… ladies.” He looked her up and down as if he was undressing her with his eyes and Lola blushed, “As it stands, I don’t make it a point to sleep with the help.”
Sam ushered Lola back into the car and they drove off.
“He’s a really nice guy once you get to know him,” Sam offered.
Lola pouted.
She was here to do a job and get on with her life.
She didn’t want to get to know the irresistible, yet ego=maniacal Magnus Moran.
